GC Labs Completes '2022 Dr LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program Training Course for Infectious Disease 2022-11-23

 

GC labs provided three months Training Course for Infectious Disease Specialists dedicated to developing countries, following last year's activities

▶ With the support from KOFIH, the lab was able to train Ethiopian and Tanzanian trainees on its TB diagnostics and management know-how

 

GC Labs recently announced that it held the closing ceremony of the '2022 Dr LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program Training Course for Infectious Disease Specialists (TB)' entrusted by the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) on November 9th, 2022. Continuing its last year's progress, GC Labs is actively promoting Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects in developing countries this year. And it is striving to expand its international cooperation activities, such as taking a role as a training institution for 'Dr LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program' to strengthen the capacity of healthcare workforce in partner countries. 

 

One Ethiopian (EPHI, Researcher) and two Tanzanians (KIDH, MD & Lab Scientist) participated in the 'Training Course for Infectious Disease Specialists (TB)' and received theoretical and practical trainings for the past three months, from August to November. 

 

The 'Dr LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program' is an invitational training program to build the capacity of health and medical personnel from partner countries to honor the commitment to train the healthcare workforce of the late Dr. LEE Jong-wook, the 6th WHO Director-General.  The program provided education of 1,147 trainees from 30 countries from 2007 to 2021. Among the trainees, around 1,000 from 12 countries are members of the KOFIH Global Alumni (KGA). They play a crucial role in strengthening the global health system by spreading the lessons learned in the local setting and collaborating on cooperation projects through the KGA network. 

 

At the ceremony, Dr. Eun-hee Lee, President of GC Labs, commented, 

"GC Labs will accompany the journey of levelling up global health system, commemorating the late Dr. LEE Jong-wook's words, "We must do the right things in the right places in the right way." 

"As the leading diagnostic institution of Korea, GC Labs will continue to contribute to developing the capacity of health care personnel in partner countries." 

 

Dr. Soon Ae Kim, Director General of Research & Training Innovation Center, KOFIH, remarked during the Congratulatory Speech, 

"It is a pleasure to be able to broaden the trainees’ knowledge and skills and develop the capability in international cooperation as infectious disease experts at GC Labs, which has excellent capabilities in diagnosing major infectious diseases including tuberculosis, We look forward to expanding cooperation with the new KGA members once they return to their home countries."

"I'd like to thank KOFIH for giving us the opportunity to learn not only theory and practice but also the latest diagnostic technology at GC Labs" said Daud Dunstan Peter (KIDH, MD), the trainee representative." 

"We will contribute to the fight against infectious diseases in our specialty fields and areas."
