Clinical Significance |
This test measures specific IgG4 antibodies against food antigens that may cause food intolerance. It examines IgG4 antibodies for 90 types of foods commonly consumed by Koreans. Unlike IgE, IgG4 is not considered a mediator of acute allergic reactions, but rather a reflection of the body’s response to continuous exposure to allergens. Generally, the presence of specific IgG4 antibodies is interpreted as an immune response to the corresponding food and subsequent development of tolerance. However, in certain conditions such as eosinophilic esophagitis, IgG4 has been reported to act as a pathogenic factor that can worsen symptoms.
To identify the cause of an acute allergic reaction to a specific food, specific IgE testing is essential and should be performed prior to IgG4 testing. Nevertheless, in cases of chronic allergic conditions, IgG4 testing can be helpful in identifying potential allergenic foods and understanding the patient’s immune status. It may also indicate which foods should be avoided when symptoms occur. |
